The ancient healing skill of reflexology has been around for many thousands of years with the earliest record dating back to 2,500 BC. It was probably practiced in many countries such as Egypt, India and China. In the tomb of an Egyptian physician Ankhmahor, a hieroglyph was discovered depicting a form of hand and foot treatment.

Since those early times many scientists and doctors have researched the effects of touch and gentle pressure on the feet to a reflex reaction in certain parts of the body. Dr. William Fitzgerald of New England is often acknowledged as the “father” of reflexology. He discovered that when he applied pressure to certain parts of the body he could produce a numbness and pain relief in another part. This was called zone therapy. However, it was Eunice Ingram who pioneered the use of reflex techniques on the feet and hands to stimulate a response in the corresponding organs and systems of the body.
